Getting to Know . . .
Doctor Jim Hankinson, Owner

Getting People Well Through Natural Means

Dr. Jim Hankinson learned about chiropractic care at the early age of 14 after a sports injury left him suffering neck pain. His treatment by Chiropractor, Dr. Nick Rubaruch, set him on the path to a new way of healthy living and the desire to help others.

The Chiropractic care he received as a youngster proved invaluable to him. When he was in his early 20’s, he slipped and fell at the restaurant where he was working while a college student. The surgery his neurosurgeon said he needed included the fusion of two discs. This would have put him out for at least six weeks and would have prevented him from participating in numerous physical activities in the future.

“Any back surgery changes your life. I opted for Chiropractic care instead and have never regretted that decision,” he explains. Dr. Rubaruch treated him three times a week for six weeks and was able to not only help Dr. Jim’s pain, but also enabled him to avoid surgery.

Throughout his life, Dr. Jim has continued to receive Chiropractic care which has allowed him to continue his active lifestyle. He has competed in over 30 triathilons and 8-1/2 marathons. He would not have been able to do this if he had chosen back surgery.

After graduating from Logan College of Chiropractic, he opened a small office in Alton, IL, later moved to O’Fallon, MO and then into Kirkwood. He takes a different approach to patient care, getting to know his patients on a first name basis by spending time listening and catering to their needs. His friendliness, coupled with his kind and gentle nature may be the reason most choose to call him “Dr. Jim.”

Dr. Jim has developed a passion for educating others about Chiropractic care. This passion is evident when dealing with first-time patients. “The first visit can be a bit overwhelming. It gives me the opportunity to clear up any misconceptions the patient may have about Chiropractic care, such as ‘once you go to see a Chiropractor, you have to keep going back.’ I want the patient to be comfortable with me and the care I provide so I go through the vertebral subluxation complex, talk about the five different facets I look for to see if they have anything going on in their body including range of motion issues; muscle inflammation, muscle tightness, nerve irritation, pain. I do an exam and x-rays are taken.

“On the second visit, I look at the x-rays with the patient. I point out what they have and what can be done to treat it and answer any and all their questions so they will fully understand and be ready to follow the treatment plan I lay out for them.”

Dr. Jim also realizes his responsibilities include serving as a role model for good health to his patients. “I couldn’t talk to my patients about the components of achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle if I didn’t practice it myself,” he explains.

From age 14, he has been dedicated to the study of subjects related to helping his patients attain good health. He has succeeded in becoming a fine Chiropractor, making it the cornerstone of his continued commitment to do even more for all those interested in becoming healthier. Beyond being a Chiropractor, he is establishing himself as a health expert.

Weight control can be a key factor in becoming healthier. “I am a proponent of the Slim & Trim Weight Loss System. It’s a safe, effective doctor supervised approach that takes the guesswork out of the process and replaces it with testing.”

Dr. Jim is also committed to looking for underlying causes that might interfere with optimal health and wellness. Beginning with a consultation, he will determine what objective tests would be most beneficial for you.

“We combine these results with other diagnostic tools, enabling us to perform an in-depth analysis of your body. This analysis outlines any problem areas, minor or major conditions that, if left untreated, may lead to serious illness, diseases and more.

“Your detailed report will clearly explain specific dietary, lifestyle and nutrient recommendations based on your individual results. The identification of food allergy and/or food sensitivity has become extremely important to your overall health.

“In addition, we make hair analysis available. This is helpful in my checking the level of possibly harmful minerals in your body.

“Like a fingerprint, your blood chemistries and metabolism are unique. Our program is designed with that in mind.”

About Chiropractors
Chiropractors are experts in the care of the bones, nerves, muscles and connective tissues that make up about 60% of your body. All of the joints in your body are part of this musculo-skeletal system and its optimal function is necessary for overall good health. Your care program may include specific spinal adjustments, exercise recommendations, nutritional advice or other conservative methods of care are based on your health history, age, current condition and lifestyle.

Today’s Doctor of Chiropractic takes four years of post-graduate college education to master the adjusting “art” of chiropractic.

About Chiropractic Care
Since its beginning, chiropractic has been based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of virtually every cell, tissue, organ, and system of your body. Chiropractic care can help with a variety of pain and ailments such as back pain, shoulder pain, sciatica, migraines and plantar fasciitis.

We also can help you and your health in many other ways with massage therapy; metabolic and food sensitivity testing; muscle and tissue work; sports physicals. While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable, covered by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal motion or position, they can irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the function of the tissues or organs the nerves control, and is called the Vertebral Subluxation Complex or Subluxation Syndrome.

Low Back Pain
Many factors can be responsible for low back pain. Improper sitting or lifting, overexertion, trauma, or inherited spinal abnormalities may contribute to the cause. As a chiropractor, Dr. Jim is an expert at using specific chiropractic adjustments to help improve spinal function.

About Subluxation
A subluxation, or the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, describes what happens when spinal bones lose their normal motion or position from stress, trauma or chemical imbalances. Automobile collisions, improper lifting, drugs, alcohol, emotional stress, chemical imbalances and long periods of sitting can all cause the Vertebral Subluxation Complex. Like dominoes that fall in a chain reaction, problems that are left uncorrected can cause other parts of your body to not work as intended.
